Frequently Asked Questions

How does pricing work?

Each project requires unique pricing. Types of material, design complexity, specific hardware choices, and estimated time all play into the estimate of what your project will cost. Once I have a few basic details about your desired project, I am usually able to give a ballpark range on what the project will cost. If you have a specific budget in mind, please let me know, and I will gladly attempt to design within your budget. Never hesitate to ask questions; I will always do my best to answer and explain!

What is your general timeline?

Timelines for new projects depend on which projects are already in the “work lineup”. Often, there are 5-10 months between contract signing and completion. There is always a chance I can squeeze your project in before that! There is also a possibility that I am prepping for a show and it will take longer than 5-10 months after you reach out to me. I am always honest with timeframes and I enjoy keeping my customers in the loop!

What do I make? What do I not make?

SPS strives to provide top-quality hardwood custom furniture and woodwork! Everything we make is crafted in our woodshop and delivered straight to your home or business. Because this is our consistent goal, we do not make and install cabinetry (think kitchen cabinets) or built-ins of almost any kind. We use locally sourced hardwoods to make all of our pieces and choose not to use reclaimed materials (such as old pine beams) because of the damage the material causes to our machines.

Where do you source your materials?

I source hardwoods from several local wood providers in central Virginia. Their material is sustainably sourced and never features chemical drying processes. The wood is almost always dried with either a dehumidification kiln or a vacuum kiln, guaranteeing proper moisture levels and beautiful color retention that isn’t found in major lumber stores. Wood shopping is one of my favorite parts of the process!

Do you provide shipping?

For small items or gifts, I am happy to provide USPS shipping. For large-scale items, I usually deliver and install them myself so that I can guarantee a project’s safe arrival and see it to absolute completion. If this isn’t possible, I will use a white glove shipping company to deliver your project safely.

Start to finish: What is the commission process?

After I receive your initial inquiry, we will brainstorm ideas together. Once we have finalized an idea, I provide an official estimate- often including numerous options for you to choose from. Once you’ve made your choice, you will receive and sign a contract. After that, I request a 40% deposit before beginning any projects. At this point, you’ve made it onto the “work lineup” and I will begin the woodwork of your idea! I will send updates as the work gets closer to completion. Upon completion, we will schedule a time for delivery. I’ll bring (or ship) your item to you and it will be ready for you to enjoy for years to come!
