“Furniture is the one thing that turns a house into a home. Beautiful custom pieces create living spaces where you actually want to spend your time.”

Who I Am

I've been creating things for as long as I can remember.  As a child, I wasn't allowed much access to media, so I was encouraged to entertain myself with creativity.  My granddaddy was a furniture maker and welcomed me into his space as a young child.  I even joined an "old man's" wood carving club as a third-grader, just so I could spend more time with him-

Little did I know, the wood world would become my world.  When I was 15, my granddaddy died and left his shop to me.  I had no plans for it, but knew that I wanted to attend art school because of my love for design, painting, 3-D work, and photography.  I delved into the Craft world at VCU where I earned a BFA in Crafts and Material Studies and concentrated in furniture design and woodworking. I graduated and went to work for a traditional furniture genius in Richmond. After living in a world where I constructed someone else's ideas, I felt a deep need for a life where I could design, build, and make my own work, while being in direct relationship with my customers.

So I created Sallie Plumley Studio.

I now design and build timeless, custom pieces for clients who want their living or work spaces to convey their personal tastes. Each piece is made with locally sourced and naturally dried wood and is finished with oils that bring out the natural tones of the material. I often incorporate knots and sapwood where appropriate as a testament to the tree's life and its natural beauty. With every piece I make, I pay special attention to detail and provide the quality that allows my customers to pass their pieces on from generation to generation.

"A Passion for Excellence"

"Working with Sallie was a joy from start to finish. I had wine crates which I wanted to incorporate into a special gift for my daughter.  Sallie transformed my amalgamation of ideas into a cohesive, lovely design.  Her communication during the design process was outstanding, and the resulting side tables exceeded my expectations in beauty and functionality.  Sallie is a true artist with a passion for excellence.  I could not have been more pleased with the entire experience."

"Took the time to talk through our vision"

"When we were looking for a kitchen island, we could’ve easily gone to a store and possibly spent the same amount of money.  Instead, we chose a quality craftswoman who took the time to talk through our vision, was communicative with her timeline, and made sure we were satisfied. Even when our original design didn’t function well for our family, she was willing to do some retrofitting to make the piece work for our family. She made a solid piece of furniture!"

"Exceeded our expectations"

"When we recently set out to update the design of our living room we made an intentional decision to give preference to local makers. We were looking for a number of pieces including a custom media cabinet to fit a specific space in our living room. We decided to work with Sallie to design and build the custom media cabinet. Sallie exceeded our expectations not only in the design and quality of the piece she delivered, but also in the way she carried herself as a business woman. Very few people are able to deliver on all levels of a creative project, Sallie is one of those people."

“Will not disappoint”

"The craftsmanship and fine attention to detail attributed to her work is unparalleled. Her determination to get the project just right- to both the customer's standards and, even more so, her own- will not disappoint."

“An excellent product!”

"Sallie's work is amazing. She educated us on our options, kept us in the loop throughout the production period, and the attention to detail in the final product was incredible. We got multiple quotes from reputable vendors, but Sallie's value, attention to detail, and desire to produce an excellent product won us over.

We got an estimate from Sallie after learning about her on the Church Hill Buy/Sell/Trade facebook page. She came to our home, listened to our vision, took measurements, and provided an estimate and timeline. Sallie's woodworking talent is beyond her years and we are thrilled to be her clients."

“Artistic in Every Detail”

“We absolutely love our table!  From the beautiful and meticulous copper stitching to the color of the wood in the live edge, Sallie was attentive to and artistic in every detail.  Sallie grasped our vision very easily, and she turned our dream into a practical yet gorgeous dining room table.  We appreciated that Sallie's early estimates and budget stayed on point, and the entire process from design to delivery was flawless.  We're proud to have our table in our dining room for years to come, and we could not recommend Sallie's amazing work and professionalism more.”

"A Beautiful Table that Will Be In Our Family for Years to Come"

"This was our first time working with a furniture maker, so Sallie came to our house to get a sense of our style as a family. She asked questions and picked up on our vision for our home space. We got feedback from her on our ideas, and she provided flexibility as the design process proceeded to adjust to our specific needs and preferences. We now have a beautiful table that will hopefully be in our family for years to come."

"The perfect piece to finish our living room!"

"The whole process of having Sallie build this table for us was special.  When she first met with us, all I could tell her was the general size that I wanted and the feeling that I wanted to create in the room - contemporary, urban, and light  - but highly stable and with a touch of practicality by having shelves below that didn't make the piece look weighty and somber. Sallie had excellent suggestions that kept the piece within our budget.  We felt safe in accepting her suggestions, knowing that she was not just interested in making and selling a coffee table, she wanted to make the coffee table we were envisioning for the room.

She brought us some wood samples, and we knew instantly that we wanted the copper inlay.  When she suggested copper pipe for the support and shelf structure, we knew it was what we wanted. She emailed us three sketches.  We immediately agreed on the one we wanted - and I was especially appreciative of the sketches because we chose one that was was different from what I had originally thought we would want.

We are delighted with the table and the way Sallie worked within our budget.  We know we have a special piece from a talented artist."
